In Canada, especially given the housing crisis, 65 percent of the population want an end to mass immigration. However, neither the Conservatives nor the Liberals have addressed the problem. In contrast, the People’s Party of Canada (PPC) has placed this issue at the forefront of its campaign for the 2025 federal election, scheduled for April 28.
Maxime Bernier, the PPC leader, contends that discussing the topics that concern Canadians will allow the PPC to expand its political support and get candidates in Parliament. The PPC now has 325 candidates across the country, which positions the party better than the Libertarian, Green, and Heritage parties.
However, for Bernier, addressing mass immigration is not only a political strategy but a necessary step on the path to tackling Canada’s structural problems. These include the adverse effects generated by DEI and gender policies and overreach from Ottawa. Bernier asserts: “This country is going down the drain. There is no future if we do not [make] big changes that will allow people, provinces to have more autonomy with a smaller government in Ottawa and more freedom to Canadians.”
Bernier also acknowledges the need to do away with Canada’s supply management system to improve trade relations with the United States. For him, controlling the prices of dairy, poultry, and eggs has led to a cartelization that is harming the Canadian economy. Removing it would be a win-win for Canadians and the United States.
