The return of Donald Trump to the White House means different things to different people. However, there is some consensus that his administration is attempting to revive what is known as the Monroe Doctrine, along with a slight tilt towards nonintervention and paleoconservatism. The doctrine was elucidated by President James Monroe in 1823 in his State of the Union address.
Publisher Fergus Hodgson discusses what this implies for Latin America, and Ecuador in particular, in his June 9 presentation with the CREO Movement classical-liberal political party in Quito, Ecuador. He addresses America-First’s underlying drivers, the foreign-policy outcomes, and recommendations and opportunities for the region. Hodgson warns against escalating the confrontation with the United States. Instead, he advocates new agreements and fully dollarizing economies as the path forward.
