Orlando Avendaño: How to Pull the Plug on the Soles Cartel

Chavista Dictatorship Is Vulnerable to US Pressure

Venezuelan journalist Orlando Avendaño joined the Impunity Observer podcast to discuss the US confrontation with Venezuela. For him, the recent strike on a boat signals that President Donald Trump is walking the talk and escalating with consequences.

Public opinion remains divided: some are optimistic, while others doubt Trump will actually confront dictator Nicolás Maduro. Avendaño argues that Maduro poses a direct threat to the United States. He emphasizes that this is not about regime change, but about dismantling a drug cartel that is exporting vast supplies of narcotics to the United States.

Avendaño credits three key forces driving change: (1) a renewed motivation among Venezuelan people determined to reclaim their country, (2) María Corina Machado, the opposition leader who holds democratic legitimacy, and (3) the interest of the Trump administration. Together, these ingredients fuel his optimism for a potential transition that tackles the root of the problem: organized crime.
