Mailyn Salabarria, a Cuban journalist and classical-liberal advocate, fled Cuba and moved to the United States in 2001. As a believer that freedom cannot be taken for granted, she praises the Donald Trump administration’s efforts to restore democracy and fundamental rights across the Americas.
Salabarria argues that Cubans on the island need US military support to oust the dictatorship and that Cuba is a US concern, just as Venezuela has been. She says the United States already bears significant costs when Cubans enter the country to flee the island’s misery. The US government would, therefore, reallocate taxpayer funds for broader, effective outcomes.
While she believes Washington’s stance toward Cuba is still uncertain, she frames the next debate as what a postdictatorship transition should look like. Two debated scenarios are: (1) the United States supports Cuba’s reconstruction as a sovereign country, or (2) the US government and Cuba arrange some form of territorial arrangement, akin to Puerto Rico.
