In our series covering the primary election within the Liberal Party in Honduras, the Impunity Observer has interviewed a candidate for the nomination: Jorge Calix. The youngest candidate in the race, Calix ranks as the second most popular figure within the Liberal Party.
Calix highlights the severe challenges facing Honduras. In particular, poverty affects more than half of the population. He also mentions elevated crime. This jeopardizes economic opportunities and exacerbates the emigration crisis as people flee. He warns: “If the current situation persists, no wall will stop emigration.”
A congressman since 2014, first as an alternate (2014–2018) and then as a principal congressman (2018–present), Calix has witnessed both effective and ineffective political decisions. He believes the country needs fresh solutions and ideas to tackle its challenges.
While he holds back on specifics, Calix outlines his proposals on key economic issues, including job creation, investment competitiveness, and improved security.
